Are there enough homes for the ageing population?

A recent project by Demos, ‘Top of the Ladder’, has indicated that there is a shortage of housing for the older generation with 3.5 million people aged over 60 wishing to buy retirement property, but only 100,000 suitable homes exist.

According to Demos one option to help address the housing shortage is to increase the availability of appropriate housing for the people at the top of the ladder – only 2 per cent of the current UK housing stock is dedicated retirement Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director at P C Henderson comments on key considerations to help answer demand, whether new build or for refurbishment projects;

“The design and functionality of a home is an important consideration to provide elderly occupiers with a comfortable place to live in.
