Jessica Zoob trained at Central School of Art and Nottingham University, during which she travelled extensively, spending time on research in China and exploring other parts of Indonesia. For seven years, she worked as a theatre designer at venues including the Bristol Old Vic, the Royal National Theatre and Greenwich Theatre.

Since 2000, Jessica has worked exclusively as an artist from her Lewes home and studio. She exhibits regularly in and around London and has works in private collections worldwide.

Jessica’s paintings are instantly recognisable by her process of building up and scraping back layers of paint, her use of liquid glazes which force her into complete spontaneity and her use of crushed mixed media including gesso, sand, cement or crushed glass and crystal to build up the painting’s underlying structure.

Jessica has been the featured artist at London Design Week in Chelsea Harbour, London. She has had major collections shown at Rove Gallery in Hoxton Square, The Great Room 1508 London and Medici Gallery, Cork Street.

“Zoob’s use of line, texture and colour recall the work of Gerhard Richter’s abstract paintings and the poetic quality of Claude Monet’s later works. However, they are rich in imagination with an innate energy and beauty all of their own.”

My environment has always inspired me, whether rural or urban. I love untamed nature, craggy rocks and bleak moors. I find myself fascinated and moved by crumbling plaster walls that reveal the bones of a building and bear its human history in marks and faded paint. This interplay between man and nature often finds its way into my work. I do not usually intend the paintings to be figurative but they are often completed and given meaning by the viewer’s imagination. I may be inspired by a storm, a mountain, or a love affair – or possibly all three,” says Jessica Zoob.
