Domestic Sprinklers

Share

Sprinkler systems are ultimately designed to save lives and have been proven to control 99.7% of all fires. The Sprinkler heads are flush fitted to the ceilings activated individually, only when extreme temperatures (170ºF), are reached at the actual sprinkler head, thus eliminating false activation.

With the new version of Approved Document B, and the RRO there is clear recognition of the value of Sprinklers, not only in enhancing life safety of occupants but also of their value in providing additional levels of fire protection. Sprinklers are seen as providing an engineered solution.

One of the most ignored benefits of sprinklers is the additional flexibility, which sprinklers provide to designers and builders. Sprinklers can allow for much more interesting use of space. In unconventional or unusual buildings, including sprinklers in a specification will often enable Building Regulations compliance to be achieved in a very cost-effective manner. Where changes of use are being anticipated, utilizing sprinklers is often the only way in which means of escape requirements can be provided. In other situations, the freedom Architects seek to implement with a stylish or unorthodox design can only be accomplished using sprinklers. Overall, designers can achieve greater freedom to fulfil their overall vision. Including features such as:

  • Larger compartment sizes.
  • More open spatial designs.
  • Reducing exit door widths.
  • Reducing periods of fire resistance to elements of a structure.
  • Reducing constraints such as distances between buildings.

Heritage Experts

Fire is possibly the greatest threat to those who serve to protect heritage buildings. As unlike other factors such as theft and vandalism that may only damage a heritage building, fire is the only element that will if left unprotected destroy a building to its very roots. With heritage buildings poor and outdated means of escape, not only can fire sprinklers help to protect a heritage building from the risk of fire, but help to adhere with current building regulations without significant architectural building modification. As a recognised heritage expert in the UK sprinkler industry, Domestic Sprinklers have installed many a system to vulnerable listed buildings across the U.K and take great pride in having done so.
