DWA Architects wins International Design Competition

Share

DWA Architects have announced the successful selection of their architectural master plan for a brand new facility providing Elderly Person Care and Specialist Assisted Living for 1024 residents in Shunde, Guangzhou in the Guangdong Province, China.

The award winning York based Architects Practice, partnered with Beijing based design consultancy TLD, were selected to enter the design competition, following a rigorous international selection process alongside Hong Kong and Danish based Architectural Practices.

The brief for the competition called for the design to take into account aspects of the Chinese culture, unique to the Guangdong Province, the service user specialist operational requirements, the rapidly growing Chinese elderly care and living needs and the aesthetical considerations of the local Lingnan style of architecture.

The practice’s winning design is impressive, encompassing a diverse range of modern facilities to meet a broad spectrum of care and specialist housing needs including: Elderly Person Residential Care, a Rehabilitation Centre, Intensive Care and Recovery Care. In addition, the design accommodates Independent Living apartments for Elderly People with specialist leisure and activity facilities as well as over 300 Assisted Living apartments.

Having kept a diligent eye on the increasing demand for purpose built care and assisted living facilities internationally, DWA Architects have built a solid foundation of knowledge and key contacts across the country. This has ensured that the design skills and industry expertise which the firm has fostered over the last 25 years in the UK, can translate seamlessly to the wider Chinese and International markets.

‘We wanted to ensure that we could fulfil the responsibilities of such a large scale development,’ Director of International Projects, Mel Fairbourn-Varley said of the scheme, ‘It has taken some time to build effective networks in China but we are now beginning to reap the benefits of our efforts to grow our business internationally and to expand into the Chinese elderly care and specialist housing sectors’.

The firm is celebrating the success of their winning design and is now working towards successfully developing over the next 25 years, a strong international presence as a leading authority in architectural design across the elderly care and specialist housing markets, and to meet the unique specialist living and care needs of a hugely growing elderly person population internationally.
