InterContinental London Westminster

Share

At the new InterContinental London Westminster – in the former Queen Anne’s Chambers – over 300 door closers and floor springs from DORMA have helped architects Dexter Moren Associates to transform a 19th century former government building into a luxury hotel fit for the 21st century.

As a showpiece project in the UK’s political heartland and the first InterContinental to open in London in 34 years, the hotel design embodies luxurious living and British heritage. With consistency of quality and finish of paramount importance throughout the development, architectural ironmonger Harbrine specified a range of fixtures, fittings and equipment from market leaders DORMA.

Approximately 300 x ITS 96 concealed door closers and 40 x BTS 80 EMB, BTS 80 and BTS 75V floor springs were supplied and installed across the hotel to offer maximum reliability, proven quality and peace of mind.

The first system of its kind to subtly integrate door closers into the leaf and frame of the door itself, the DORMA ITS 96 was can be incorporated into most door type to maintain an elegant interior design. Combining a stunning appearance with exceptional performance, the DORMA ITS96 concealed closers were selected for the bedroom doors due to their low opening forces (in in accordance with BS8300:2009 and Approved Document M), fire test performance and hidden design.

To complete the specification and further improve accessibility for the hotel’s visitors, a series of DORMA floor springs were specified. These were installed below floor level and finished with a Terrazzo pan as an alternative to a cover plate, providing a continual floor finish to perfectly complement the hotel’s stunning new interior.

Suitable for all door types and CE marked to BS EN 1154, these universal floor springs feature a two-valve controllable closing cycle, adjustable closing speed and backcheck.

BTS 80 floor springs, allow the door to be set to a particular degree of opening. Some of the units installed – the BTS 80 EMB – incorporate an electronic hold-open option and are linked to the fire alarm system for automatic release in the event of a fire alarm, making them ideal for corridors and circulation routes.

Open to the public in November 2012, the installation of DORMA’s high performance door closers and floor springs has ensured reliable and efficient access at the flagship hotel – the first ‘InterContinental’ branded property to open in London for almost 35 years.
