Reaching new heights with Thonet: The 118H bar stool and the 1500 table

Thonet, the famed furniture pioneer which celebrated its double centenary in 2019, has recently responded to the demand for ‘higher level’ furniture with two impressive new designs.

High Level seating with Range 118

The elegant wooden chair range 118, which was introduced at imm cologne in early 2018 to great success, has reached new heights with the addition of a chic and comfortable bar stool model in either a wicker or an upholstered seat.

At once simple and sophisticated, the 118 range by rising star Sebastian Herkner is based on the principle developed by Michael Thonet in the mid-19th century of reducing a chair to the minimum of elements. Referencing the iconic 214 Thonet chair with its seat frame bent from a single piece of wood, and with its wickerwork seat, distinctive detailing also lends this design a clear identity. The legs are curved on the three outward facing sides but finished with a flat plane and defined edges on the inward side.  In this way they reflect the horseshoe shape of the seat and enhance the timeless charm which characterises Herkner’s much-admired addition to the Thonet portfolio.

The comfortable bar stool version maintains the formal features of the 118 range, but has been developed specifically to meet the current demands of the residential, workplace and hospitality sectors, where higher level tables and bars are increasingly popular. Model 118 H is available in two heights (65 and 75 cm) and offers the perfect solution to the changing ways in which we live, work and play. The bar stools also offer a low yet comfortable and supportive backrest enabling users to enjoy these ergonomic designs for longer periods than with many typical bar stools. The attractive contrast of the metallic footrest adds to both the aesthetic and practical appeal of the new model.

The entire 118 range is available in natural beech as well as stained versions. High-gloss lacquered versions are currently being developed. The seat is either stretched with wickerwork or an upholstered version and is also available with a moulded plywood seat.

Thonet’s new conference table 1500 is available in two heights

The new conference table 1500 by Wolfgang C. R. Mezger is formally convincing while also providing systemic intelligence. With its two height options – 74 cm and 105 cm – it reacts to the common desire to be able to choose between seated or standing positions in today’s working environments while also offering an informal place for spontaneous meetings or informal discussions during breaks.

Table 1500 is simultaneously sturdy and elegant: The tabletop seems to float on the aluminium or wooden legs, which taper slightly towards the bottom. Beneath the tabletop, the legs are connected via traverses, allowing even extended lengths of tables to function robustly on only four legs. Modern media technology and all types of cable connections are discretely integrated into the tabletop upon request. All cabling is hidden within the table’s legs and the modular casing beneath. Available in standard dimensions of 200 x 100, 280 x 100, and 350 x 110 cm (table height 74 cm), the 1500 table system provides plenty of scope for meetings, conferences, workshops or downtime.
