Rocket Door Frames recently visited Cow Shed Barn in Abington, near Cambridge, to witness how its ultra flush doors have transformed an ongoing barn conversion.

Sleek and Functional: A Vision for Modern Design

Homeowners Pete and Sarah embarked on this ambitious project in 2019 when Pete discovered a neglected 1980s barn for sale while walking their dog, Lexi. The transformation has been a true labour of love, and despite a two-year planning process, the results are amazing.

Sarah shared: “We were very clear on the look we wanted. It was definitely an industrial aesthetic we were after and the ‘secret door’ effect with sleek clean lines was integral to that.”

Pete added: “We work in events and making the best use of technology with innovative, adjustable lighting and sound systems all being part of the overall vision. Everything needed to be special.”

First Impressions Count

The entrance to property is impressive; a central black metal staircase and polished concrete flooring, with a rusted metal wall feature in the works to further enhance the industrial theme. From here, four of Rocket’s ultra flush doors can be seen which already look to be a great addition to the design scheme.

The property features 14 ultra flush doors, seamlessly integrated between key living areas, including the hallway, downstairs toilet, pantry, bedrooms, and ensuite bathrooms.

Smart Design Solutions

Sometimes, achieving the perfect fit requires a touch of ingenuity. In one bedroom, an ultra flush door has been expertly cut at an angle to match the roofline. While this isn’t a standard recommendation, it highlights the advantages of high-quality materials and skilled craftsmanship.

These doors also offer adaptability, allowing the couple to change the door’s swing direction if needed. With a single product catering to left/right and push/pull configurations, ordering was hassle-free.

Effortless Installation

One of the standout benefits of ultra flush doors is their straightforward installation. The door kit requires just four screws to assemble the frame and is designed for compatibility with standard 44mm flush panel doors.

Every Rocket ULTRA system is pre-routed with a magnetic lock and strike plate, available in latch, bathroom thumb turn, or cylinder lock options. Additionally, the concealed 3-way adjustable hinges ensure a flawless finish.

Safety and Performance

Sarah and Pete also opted for a fire-rated ultra flush door leading into their garage. Fully tested and FD30 certified for 30-minute fire protection, it comes with an intumescent kit that fits into the frame rather than the door, saving both time and cost.

“We love the impact that these doors have had in our home,” Sarah says. “There have been so many positive comments from visitors and we are so proud of what we have been able to achieve.”

Ultra flush doors continue to gain popularity, providing uninterrupted surfaces that blend seamlessly with wall murals, paint effects, and wallpaper. This design choice is increasingly favoured by both architects and interior designers.
