STUNNING AND SUSTAINABLE – WL WEST TIMBER CLADDING, SHAKES & SHINGLES
Share
When it comes to versatility, sustainability and visual impact; timber cladding, shakes and shingles are hard to beat. Established in 1865, WL West Timber are experienced in working with architects on a wide range of projects, from the restoration of listed buildings to prestigious contemporary new structures.
There are a number of considerations when selecting the best timber and cladding profile or shake/shingle size and style for your project. The team at WL West work closely with clients to advise on factors such as durability, aesthetics, maintenance and cost.
We have been privileged to work on some fascinating projects. One of our clients, the excellent architectural practice, Cottrell & Vermeulen, wanted advice on internal and external cladding for a new building at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge. They considered Canadian Douglas Fir, but we suggested using homegrown Douglas Fir, which has a lower carbon footprint as it is sourced from a local well-managed Sussex woodland. After supplying samples, Cottrell & Vermeulen decided to proceed with English Douglas Fir and the finished project was so spectacular it was shortlisted for an Architects Journal Award in the ‘Higher Education’ category.
WL West are also seeing the innovative use of timber shakes and shingles for more contemporary projects. Archer and Braun Architects approached us to supply shakes to clad both the roof and walls of a new residential work studio in East London, they wanted the shakes to be finished with a black or dark grey finish. We determined that 40cm European Larch shakes were the most suitable product to meet the design brief and specification requirements. To comply with fire regulations the shakes were treated with a fire-resistant surface treatment, as well as a black coloured topcoat to achieve the desired finish.
