At the University of Bedfordshire’s new £20 million Postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Centre, DORMA’s KTV Glass Revolving Doors have provided the perfect combination of functionality, performance and energy efficiency for the stunning new main entrance.

Built by Kier Construction during the latest phase of the university’s £90 million expansion, the centre has been designed by RMJM Architects to achieve a BREEAM rating of excellent – with an anticipated score of over 73%. To achieve this, it incorporated sustainable technologies including solar panels, rainwater harvesting and an air source heat pump.

With entrances and doors key to achieving energy efficiency, specification of the building’s new main entrance was crucial for both aesthetics and thermal performance. Offering elegance and efficiency – as well the prerequisite of safe access to teaching spaces, meeting rooms and study areas – the DORMA KTV revolving door fitted the bill.

As the showcase of the refurbishment, DORMA’s specification team worked closely with RMJM Architects to fulfil their vision for the new entrance creating a positive impact in terms of aesthetics and functionality. DORMA’s energy calculator and the requirement for high levels of environmental control led to revolving doors being chosen by the design team. DORMA then worked through the detail with the architect to carefully advise and establish the right revolving door size, function and performance within this context. Two of DORMA’s KTV Glass revolving doors were selected, completing the project with a stunning, contemporary and accessible entrance.

Revolving doors act as a lobby reducing noise, dirt and drafts. The DORMA KTV revolving door can limit warm air loss and cold air intake, helping to reduce the building’s energy consumption and costs.

To complete the specification, the DORMA ED 100 low energy swing door operator was incorporated into the entrance for use as an emergency exit and pass door.

With an innovative range of revolving doors, automatic doors and manual door controls from DORMA, generations of students will benefit from market proven performance and a high quality user experience throughout this flagship university development.
