Zumtobel provides the light for Moxon Architects

Share

Zumtobel has provided the lighting for the prestigious Quarry Studios, the new Scottish Headquarters of Moxon Architects, which includes a selection of featured and functional luminaires that complement the building’s modern design. Moxon created the design for the lighting solution, which incorporates Zumtobel’s SLOTLIGHT infinity slim for the office space, PANOS infinity in the corridors and toilets, SUPERSYSTEM for the office, reception, boardroom and cafe and RESCLITE PRO and ARTSIGN emergency luminaires.

Moxon Architects has attracted clients from a variety of sectors, from national rail providers to leading cultural institutions and has a studio in West London as well as its new Headquarters in Highland Aberdeenshire. Quarry Studios is a highly contextual low-lying building sited in a former quarry, surrounded by a heavily wooded site of Special Scientific Interest in the Cairngorms National Park. The building has two main elements, vertical concrete chimneys acting as a counterpoint to the low profile mono-pitch roof which directs rainwater into a new bog and wetland area and also a large timber wall which intersects each volume.

Delivering advanced design freedom in a consistently linear design with high precision, SLOTLIGHT infinity slim luminaires have been recessed into the Hunter Douglas ceilings in the offices. A uniform appearance is ensured by prefabricated frames and spacers, whilst the separation of luminaire body and frame perfectly integrate into a consistent light line. The luminaires have an opal optic and a continuous diffuser that can be supplied in lengths of up to 20 metres, making it possible to create a seamless, continuous-row system without any shadows or overlapping. SLOTLIGHT infinity slim offers a truly integrated, low energy solution with excellent colour rendering of Ra>80, lighting efficiency of up to 92 lm/W and a service life of 50,000 hours.

PANOS infinity energy efficient downlights, illuminate the corridors and toilets. PANOS infinity luminaires increase the potential for tailor-made lighting solutions, with a choice of reflector surfaces and beam angles for functional and architectural applications and colour options of white, black or silver, to ensure maximum creative freedom for individual architectural integration. With its wide range of models, the PANOS infinity product group meets the challenges of various applications with brilliance – from homogeneous illumination of vertical or horizontal surfaces to emphasising highlights.

SUPERSYSTEM integral in a black finish with direct / indirect spotlights illuminate the office, reception, boardroom and café. This slim-profile track system with miniaturised LED spotlights leaves nothing to be desired from strip horizontal lighting to indirect and direct highlighting. SUPERSYSTEM integral provides an output of up to 3000 lumens, up to 75 lumens per Watt, colour temperatures of 2700 K, 3000 K and 4000 K to suit various different requirements, whilst excellent colour rendering of Ra 90 comes as standard.

Emergency lighting has been provided throughout by RESCLITE PRO maximum efficiency luminaires and ARTSIGN emergency signage that blend attractive design with the highest technical standards. Delivering the highest levels of safety lighting, the powerful RESCLITE PRO uses small, energy-efficient LED spots with finely optimised optics provide emergency lighting that can be perfectly adapted to suit the requirements of different spatial environments. ARTSIGN is the smallest escape sign luminaire in the Zumtobel portfolio. With a recognition range of 15 m, it is roughly the size of a postcard and blends harmoniously into any room. LED technology supports reliable operation over a long lifetime without the need for maintenance. Innovative engineering enables illumination of the escape sign at a standard-compliant luminance of 500 cd/m² in the white light spectrum.

Zumtobel and Moxon have worked on many projects before including the new HQ for the Cairgorms National Park Authority. Moxon’s Managing Director Ben Addy said: ‘Having worked with Zumtobel on previous projects, we were aware of their diverse and extensive range of luminaires and chose them as they were able to provide an efficient and attractive solution that was well suited to all of our lighting design requirements for our team here in Scotland’.
