From intimate hideaways to chic, contemporary open spaces, mews houses can offer a surprising amount of in and outdoor space.

Mews houses are often extremely adaptable properties. They can be altered and converted and imaginatively redesigned to create deceptively large and beautiful homes.

RBD Architecture & Interiors specialise in mews house architecture and interior design in London. We have redesigned and restored some of the city’s most sought-after mews house properties for both private owners and developers.

Mews house properties are probably more frequently extensively redeveloped than any other kind of London property. Despite their historical charms, mews houses tend not to be listed which allows more freedom when it comes extending and renovating.

The last 15 years have seen Londoners excavating beneath their properties to create and design all kinds of exciting extensions. Many of the capital’s most exclusive residential addresses now have almost as much space below ground as above. Basement excavations have proved particularly popular for London mews houses. These subterranean spaces are an excellent way of limiting the visual impact on properties – especially those located in designated conservation areas, bound by planning restrictions.

With the creative use of architectural details such as open staircases, glass floor panels and internal lightwells, basement extensions can be a light, spacious and functional key addition to the home.  Gone are the days of dark, damp, cellar type spaces. Basement extensions (or new lower ground floor levels as we prefer to call them) now provide quality space for a range of mixed uses from bedrooms, gyms, cinema rooms, playrooms, main reception rooms, utilities, zen gardens and swimming pools.

Once you experience life in a mews house you will never look back. Beyond their charm you will soon become part of the warm community spirit which exists in the idyllic backwater calm of their picture postcard streets.

Here is one of our recently completed Mews House Projects:

Private Residence, London SW1X – This stunning Mews house was significantly altered, extended, and refurbished after obtaining planning consent from City of Westminster and licence approval from Grosvenor Estate. The original internal floors and roof structure were demolished before excavating and forming a new lower ground floor extension with cinema room. The front and rear elevations were then altered in keeping with the building’s original character before reconstructing the house internally to suit the owner’s modern living requirements. The success of this project is due largely to a beautifully crafted custom designed slender staircase with rooflight over allowing light to reach the lower ground floor stairwell level. This small but beautifully formed house is finished to the highest standard, detailed and coordinated to make efficient use of the space available.
