M-Tray® from Wallbarn is the new modular green roof system

Share

M-Tray® from Wallbarn is the new modular green roof system, designed to give a luxurious, long lasting living roof with minimum maintenance. Each tray unit is a mini green roof in its own right, and each module clicks together to form a seamless, instant green roof.

Installation couldn’t be easier. These lightweight modules are delivered to site on pallets and are simply laid onto the roof or terrace deck and clicked together. The clip fastenings on the sides of the modules provide an easy-to-fit but extremely solid fixing, so that when all modules are connected a single layer is created, securely in place. Each module can be carried by hand. Just place them down and clip together. The joints will become invisible as the sedum grows.

Everything required for an effective green roof is enclosed in the M-Tray® units. Applicators do not need to worry about loose substrates spilling onto and potentially damaging waterproofing membranes. Installing incorrect drainage and filtration layers is avoided, installing incorrect levels or ratios of elements is impossible. Sheet membranes blowing off the roof is a thing of the past. With M-Tray®, it is simply a matter of placing the unit onto the deck and clicking into place. It really is a living carpet tile.

Our new M-Tray® module has been designed to encourage maximum root growth to produce strong, healthy plants which will last in the long term. All the required drainage, propagation and filtration elements are included within the module itself. The contents are held securely within the walls so nothing spills out, keeping the root structures and plants securely in place and preventing damage.  Everything necessary has bene measured and installed. Applicators do not need to worry about aby additional ingredients.

M-Tray® is designed in England. M-Tray® is made in England. The modules are manufactured from recycled polypropylene and the substrate is made with recycled compost. Each module measures 500 x 500 x 100 so exactly four units make up 1 square metre. The module has bene specially designed for the job. Wallbarn has not been adapting existing materials to fit the job. We went back to the drawing board and created a bespoke, designed-for-the-job unit to maximise the quality of the green roof.

The module is 100mm deep and has been designed to give a large volume for root structures and also provide adequate drainage. Sedum plants need space in which to grow. They cannot thrive with minimal build-up of substrate.

The substrate is mixed to Wallbarn’s own specification to create a semi-low nutrient, free draining lightweight substrate. It encourages strong root growth and will not bind up or become waterlogged over time. We have worked extensively with horticultural experts over a long period of time to create a substrate which will produce the strongest possible vegetation.

The plants have also been chosen especially for the job. M-Tray® is grown in our special nurseries and contains a diverse mixture of sedum species, specially chosen to be suitable for a northern European climate. They have been selected to give comprehensive ground cover as well as a mixture of textures and appearance, producing a range of flowers across the summer. The modules are plated up and grown for a period of 12 months at the nursery so the plants are mature and fully established before delivery to site. This gives the green roof the best possible chance to thrive in the long term.
