Envirolead – fully recycled BS12588 lead from car batteries

Share

Envirolead is BS EN 12588 rolled lead sheet manufactured by Envirowales using material recovered exclusively from car batteries (each of which provides around 11kg of base material). The sophisticated extraction and refining process is carried out at the only plant of its type in the UK and recycles over 95% of all constituents. This gives architects the opportunity to specify lead by name for the first time rather than just the appropriate thickness Code. As a result, they can be certain that material is not only of the highest quality but the lowest possible environmental impact. It also offers scope to be covered by the 50-year Lead Sheet Association warranty providing the material is installed to LSA requirements and used in conjunction with Premium Roofing Products.

Recycling of lead requires only around one third of the energy needed to produce it from ore while the process greatly reduces sulphur discharge by removing acidic electrolyte, a major element of ‘acid rain’. An added bonus is the recovery of sodium sulphate for use as a bulking agent in washing powders and, by virtue of FEMAS accreditation, animal feeds. Polypropylene from the casing is sold to companies specialising in plastics recycling leaving only polyethylene which is currently the subject of a major R&D programme to determine an economically viable means of re-use.

Envirowales is part of the International Industrial Metals (2IM) Group which for distribution also includes Associated Lead, Jamestown Metals Ltd, Jamestown Metals Resources, and Royston Specialist Cast Lead. Royston uses the direct machine casting process to produce BBA-certified Envirocast lead which is also made using the same recycled material as Envirolead.
