New Coronation Street set, Trafford

Share

Television history has been helped along the way by a Tameside brick factory. Workers at Wienerberger’s Denton factory are supplying 52,000 special edition ‘Coronation Medley’ bricks for the new set as Coronation Street is recreated in Trafford.

It is the third time the factory, owned by the world’s biggest brick manufacturer Wienerberger, has been called upon by bosses at ITV to help with projects on the most famous street in Britain.

In 1989 the original construction of the new townhouses opposite the infamous terrace used the ‘Homestead Medley’ from Wienerberger’s Terca range and in last year’s 50th Anniversary special, the factory also provided extra bricks for the filming of the tram disaster. Now the programme has moved to its new home.

Other materials used in the rebuild have been provided by regional merchant Lancashire Brick and Tile.

Wienergerber2First broadcast on 9 December 1960, Coronation Street is the world’s longest running continuing drama. ITV’s move to MediaCityUK has seen the whole Coronation Street lot rebuilt on the Trafford side of the canal next to the Imperial War Museum North

Paul Atack, manager at Wienerberger’s Denton Works, said:

“We’re thrilled to be involved in such a significant milestone for Coronation Street. The show holds a special place in the hearts of millions of people around the world, and among our workers and their families, so it’s a real honour for us to have our bricks used on some the most famous and familiar properties in the country. A special ‘Coronation Medley’ has been manufactured to provide an exact match to the original ‘Homestead Medley’, which was originally manufactured at the Denton factory in the 1980s and 90s. The brick colouring and aesthetic appearance is also in keeping with the traditional red brick houses commonly found in the local area.”

Kieran Roberts, Coronation Street’s Executive Producer, added:

“It’s great to be able to involve local companies on the redevelopment of Coronation Street. Wienerberger’s Denton factory has a long-standing relationship with the show and provides us with a fantastic link to the heritage of the original set. We’re really pleased that Wienerberger was able to produce a product that matched the original brick work to help us recreate our lot as accurately as possible.”
